Texting in China

Live report from Beijing:

Problem:
I received a Text Message from China Unicom Help, my mobile phone company. It reads:
流量短信提醒默认按周发送,您将在每周一和每月第一天收到短信提醒。您可直接
回复ATTX更改为按天提醒,或回复QXTX取消短信提醒功能。

Action Taken:
I dialed 10010 Ext. 2, China Unicom's English Help Desk

Response:
Customer Service Representative #332: "How may I assist you?"

Me: "Hi! I keep receiving text messages from you guys in Chinese and I cannot understand them. Can you tell me what they say?"

Representative: "Certainly. Please read me the text message and I will tell you."

Result:
Me: dumb-founded

With love!

  2. That is freaking hysterical! Today I found a mistake in the English in my fortune cookie. I thought of you and a future for you in writing wacky fortunes. You could cross reference your tarot deck for lucky numbers while you were at it!

  4. so my friend Angela who was raised Lutheran and later converted to Catholicism and then to Judaism when she got married had a similar issue with her daughter recently...daughter hit some button and her electronic messages turned into Hebrew - along with all the commands - so she couldn't figure out how to get back to English.

    What a wonderful world.
